The
Zeederberg Family has become synonomous with the early days of
Stagecoach travel in Southern Africa.
The
Zeederberg Brothers pioneered many coaching routes for the first
time, serving the gold and diamond mining areas and opening up
remote parts of South Africa for the first time.
Cecil
John Rhodes commissioned the Zeederberg brothers to cut the first
roads into the interior and they were responsible for the first
regular transport routes into the land that is now known as Zimbabwe.
The
early days of stagecoach travel was arduous and adventurous. Drivers
and passengers had to keep a sharp eye out for untold dangers
including attacks from elephant and lion, crocodiles in flooded
rivers or being held up by highwaymen.
Zeederberg
Coaches were famous for their experimental use of zebras to pull
the coaches. The zebras were sucessfully trained and harnessed
and took part in a few coach runs. Unfortunately the animals
were found to have less stamina than the coach hourses and the
Zeederbergs went back to horses instead!
